Argentina Successfully Launches First Home-Built Satellite


The first geostationary satellite constructed by a Latin American country was launched in Argentina Thursday.

ARSAT-1 is the product of seven years of work by a crew of about 500 scientists. The project cost $250 million.

The satellite was launched from French Guaiana┬┤s space base. It will provide digital television and cellphone services to Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
