The three members of the Russian rock band "Pussy Riot" were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred and sentenced to 2 years in prison. The verdict sparks worldwide protest.
Judge Marina Syrova said the women "were aware of the offensive nature of their actions. They sought to publicize their act and provoke a public reaction; they wanted to insult not only church clergy but also the broad sections of society."
Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alyokhina, 24 and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30 performed a punk prayer in Moscow´s Christ the Savior Cathedral to speak out against President Vladidimir Putin.
