A study by researchers at Boston University Medical Center finds that alcohol, when consumed in moderation, may improve women´s bone health. This applies to women in menopause.
In an experiment 40 healthy postmenopausal women drank two small glasses of alcohol daily. When they stopped drinking they had a higher risk of developing osteoporosis.
"Abstinence from alcohol resulted in increased markers of bone turnover (...) whereas resumption of alcohol consumption reduced bone turnover markers," the researchers claim.
