Toni Medrano, the 29-year-old mother, who allegedly drank a bottle of vodka and passed out on the couch where she rolled onto her 3-week-old son, committed suicide by lighting herself on fire.
Medrano of St. Paul, Minn. faced second-degree manslaughter charges after the Nov. 22 death of her son. He was suffocated by his mother, who found him dead when she awoke.
Medrano died of the self-inflicted burns at Regions Hospital. She used a flammable liquid to set herself on fire. The exact cause of her death is under investigation.
