Florida Woman Faces 20 Years in Prison for Firing Warning Shots at Abusive Husband

A Florida judge has sentenced Marissa Alexander, 31 of Jacksonville to 20 years in prison because she fired what her family called a "warning shot" against her allegedly abusive husband in August 2010.

Alexander was convicted of attempted murder even though she said she feared for her life and only tried to defend herself.

Her attorney called for a new trial based on Florida"s "Stand Your Ground" law, which allows the use of deadly force in some life-threatening situations, but a judge decided that the law did not apply because she was not in genuine fear for her life.

  Bah

This judge is a damn idiot. Trayvon gets killed messing with someone, someone attempts to mess with someone and gets WARNING shots, 20 years in prison. By that logic (if we consider where she´s aiming) You and the guy next to you at the shooting range attempted to murder eachother.

Abusive relationships are often 2 way. The question is what was he doing at that moment that made her fear for her life to warrent discharging a weapon, as opposed to just walking away? And is easy to say it was a warning shot now.... maybe she just has poor aim.

  Rules do not apply

Laws do not always apply equally by race and she should of known that the judge would throw it out.

@ Dark
Who was Trayvon messing with? I think you mean Zimmerman. He was the aggressor in that scenario.

Exactly! Zimmerman was totally wrong. He was told by the police to back off and not follow Martin, but he did it anyway. Trayvon didn´t know who the hell he was and thought he was being robbed or kidnapped and he fought back. Zimmerman was a douche and he should at least be convicted of manslaughter, if not murder.

  Confused

One shot to the chest is assumed to be self defense but warning shots are attempted murder.

My head hurts.

  Very confusing.

If he had been hit, it still should be have been self defence. He was in her home and I can only assume uninvited, yet was under court order not to approach her due to his abuse.

This sounds like completely messed up law to me.
