Number of Sudden Deaths Among Athletes Higher Than Estimated

Sudden cardiac death among athletes occurs more often than estimated. A new study found that the death rate is 1 in 43,770 student-athletes each year.

Therefore, sudden cardiac death is the most often occuring medical reason for death among student athletes.
Previous studies have underestimated the numbers.

The findings were published in the April 19 issue of "Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association".
