Sony Ceases Production of Walkman Cassette Player

Sony has announced it will no longer produce the Walkman cassette player due to low sales.

Since its debut in 1979, Sony has sold over 220 million of the device globally. Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who was involved in the production of the Walkman, said he was deeply impressed with the cassette player when he first saw it 25 years ago.

Only Apple´s iPod, which was launched in 2001, turned out to be more successful than the Walkman.

  Where do you get

cassetes for it?

I´ve still got about a hundred.

I don´t think you can buy decent blank ones anymore. Occasionally I´ll rip some songs off a cassette that I can´t find on the Net.

  when I bought one

90125 by Yes just came out and I bought that cassette first. I didn´t know they were still making them. I have a 8g Sony Walkman media player. Does that count? That will probably be discontinued in a couple of years when you will be able to stream digital straight to the implants in your inner ears.

  Bye-Bye

I still have my 1st walkman and it is still going strong. Although I do not use it much anymore I will be keeping it.

Wonder if in years to come Sony will release special editions that will become collectors items?

  Question...

What are these "cassettes" that you speak of??? I shall have to consult the dead sea scrolls for clues about this technology.

  Remember

when the batteries were low and the music started to slow down?

Remember if you didn´t have cassette tape, you tuned into the radio?

  Yes!

you could snap in the radio which was in the shape of a cassette.
