Stuck in Recliner 8 Months, Man Dies

When paramedics responded to the home of Daniel Webb, they found him in pain in his recliner, covered in sores and with a "very bad odor". He had been in the recliner since his return from the hospital in March, when paramedics warned him about this.

They told him that due to his large weight (over 500 pounds), he may not be able to get out of the recliner if he sat in it. Not having health insurance, he decided to leave matters "in God's hands" and lived in his chair.

He ate, slept, and went to the bathroom in his chair, which his wife cleaned every day. In order to get him to the hospital where he died, the paramedics needed to cut apart the chair and cut a hole in the wall of his trailer home.

  His poor wife and mom

I read this last night, I thought here I guess it must have been the other place. This story is was really sad to read about, the police investigated what happened and didn´t charge anyone because Webb refused all offers of help and he was able to make his own choices. Yeah it was elsewhere I saw it, here´s the local news link was very kind to him. http://www.wyff4.com/...

How sad for his mother and his wife to keep trying to talk himinto getting help and to still take care of him as much as possible.

  This is so sad...

and all down to money!

  @Jane

I don´t really think money was the deciding factor in his death, it seems more than anything he was just ready to die and ended up committing a very slow form of suicide.

His own will kept him in that chair.

  @ ronny...

I just read the source! He wanted to receive the treatment that was offered and he was ready to go but he could not get out of that chair not even with help. No one offered to help him get there, that is just awful!

  He had offers for help, but was too proud.

Jane- I don´t really care for the fox link and no not because it is Fox, I don´t think they did this man´s story any justice and tainted it just a tad.
Here are a few examples from that link:

(His mom)"She told deputies that her son was hospitalized with a knee injury in March. He came home from the hospital, sat in the chair and “had not moved since,” the report stated."
Mom Again:
"He´s been turned down for social security disability. We went on every Web site trying to find someone that would be willing to do the bariatric surgery," she said."

According to his wife:
"The man´s wife, who also lived in the home, told investigators that her husband did not have insurance, so the hospital transported him back home in March via ambulance."

This is also from his wife also:
"Webb´s wife said he was mentally competent and able to call for help at any time, which, she said, he refused to do. His wife told deputies that he was embarrassed and ashamed of his weight and had no desire to leave his home because when he did, people would point, look, laugh and make fun of him. She said a local church had offered to help the couple in the past, but Webb refused the offer."

  Gosh @ Tara

He put on weight by the time he got to that hospital, according to that link because they claim he was 700 to 800 pounds.

  If I ever got to that point

My wife would feed me a carrot. One carrot. Every day, until I could get my fat @$$ out of the chair and go to the bathroom myself. If you look at the quantities of food that these super-obese bed-ridden folks eat, there´s enabling going on. No one denies that they have a problem, but someone´s bringing them all that food.

I can only imagine the pain he went through daily and I do not mean just physical. Finding a good support group for yourself and your family is often harder than it sounds. He was too large to get out of his house, but was denied social security and yet if you have certain disorders or drug/ alcohol addiction, hell I even met a woman who got SSI for her ovarian cysts. I am not saying that anyone above should be denied, but a man that was at least 700 pounds is a tad stupid.

The man was in the hospital, but since there is no insurance they don´t keep you a minute longer than they are required to. He should have been given a social worker from the hospital to fill out the forms he needed to get medicaid from the state.

"His wife told deputies that he was embarrassed and ashamed of his weight and had no desire to leave his home because when he did, people would point, look, laugh and make fun of him."

This is a problem with many people that are overweight no matter how big they are, or some just think they are, once a person is teased a few times they will go out less so they don´t have to deal with the looks and comments. Looking in the mirror is to be avoided because they are are so disgusted with themselves and the self-hatred starts to take over.

He was a tortured man and like ronny mentioned I wouldn´t put it past the guy to have just given up on life.

  Damn carrots

I´ve been informed by my significant other that should I become that obese I will be placed on a 1 carrot diet. Thanks a lot guys. :(

  people this big

are surrounded by enablers. His wife should have put him on a diet. Of course, he probably would have been mad at her and made her life hell, but isn´t it already hell taking care of someone under these circumstances?

  by: gryphon50a   11/21/2009 06:00 PM
  @tara

you are so correct when you say that people that are mocked and teased for their weight can become housebound because of it. They get depressed, eat more, sit around still more, and it becomes a vicious circle.

  by: gryphon50a   11/21/2009 06:01 PM
  Poor guy, but brought on himself.

He let himself become that large so, unfortunately, he had to face the inevitable consequences of mocking/laughing. Not right, but that´s society, so it´s not exactly a surprise. Shame he was too proud to get help.

  Are you people nuts:

There´s a guy sitting on a chair, eating all day and $hitting himself. And doesn´t bother to get up and do anything - so they feed him enough food daily to keep 500 lbs worth of weight.
If there was a case of mass insanity, it is this.
What prevented the family from feeding him less???? Did he have a gun pointed at people´s heads?
Spare the rod spoil the child - child dies from it. Yikes!

  @Mexican

You will be branded as an insensitive person from your post. People with very nice and kinds hearts, like to find excuses for demented, sociopath, who is defecating on a recliner, while someone is still feeding them more to continue with trait.

But then, it only takes a cold hearted mexican, or an English gentleman to call a spade a spade and not a spoon.

I dont understand the, Aww! Poor him, he cant go outside and play, because kids are making fun of him being Fat. So he decides to barricade himself inside and still not walk to a bathroom!? Damnit break the freaking recliner, and make him go to the loo on his own, instead of sitting there and smell the poo and give him more food..
