In an African Desert, an Ocean is Born

Right now, it's just a 35-mile long crack in the ground, running through the desert of Ethiopia. But the rift, first detected in 2005 and now 20 feet wide in places, is almost certainly the beginnings of a new ocean, researchers have confirmed.

When it first opened, some geologists speculated that the rift would form a new ocean, but that view was controversial. New studies, however, show that what's happening in the rift is nearly identical to geological processes on ocean floors.

Studies also revealed that volcanic activity along the edges of tectonic plates can cause large sections to break up, rather than a slower process that had been previously theorized. The 35-mile rift was torn open in just a few days.

  I knew I´d seen this before
 And here it is: http://shortnews.com/

Now, in Lurker´s original summary, the gap was 13 feet wide; it´s widened 7 feet in about four years. If it keeps widening at that pace, it will be a mile wide in the year 5026 (I´m relying on Ben_Reilly_5024 to verify that).

It should achieve a nice oceany width of 2,000 miles across, then, by roughly the Year 6 Million. I´ll be counting on Ben_Reilly_6000000 to Google this summary and confirm whether that happened or not.

  I headed for Ethiopia....
 I´m going to be first in line to buy up all that choice ocean front real estate. In 6 million years it´s going to be worth a fortune.

  Sweet
 More information is always good. Its interesting to note that out of 33 countries that have land under sea level, here in Africa where this is happening has two near this location. Two others north of the Red Sea. So this makes so much sense of what is happening there.

  @Vhan
 One detail I left out of the summary is that the Ethiopian rift is expected to extend north to the Red Sea. I guess the Red Sea will become a northern area of the "African Ocean."
