Suspicious Sudoku Tournament Entrant Gets Third Place; Accused of Cheating

New Jersey resident Eugene Varshavsky is being investigated for cheating at a Sudoku tournament in Philadelphia after placing third among 646 competitors and receiving a prize of $3,000. Registering as a walk-on, he blazed through round two.

Second-place winner/former champ Thomas Snyder said: "Here was this new guy in a hoodie, acting mysterious and very, very confusing. Yet then, when he had to solve a problem on stage, under intense scrutiny, I saw he was in no way able to solve it."

He added that electronic devices for music or for a timer are permitted, and that there is a chance that they could be used to share the puzzle with outside sources and get help. The event is the largest U.S.-based puzzle competition.
