Blackbird Terrorises Neighbourhood: Perfectly Imitates Ambulance Sirens, Car Alarms, Ring Tones, Wolf-Whistles

UK: A Somerset neighbourhood is being driven to distraction by a blackbird that imitates sirens and car alarms at high volume starting from 5am and repeating at various intervals throughout the day. The bird has remained in the area for 3 months.

In addition, the bird is able to imitate ring tones and wolf whistles at people walking past. Experts say that mimicking is rare in blackbirds and that the bird is probably trying to attract a female. Local residents want it gone.

"The first time I heard it, I thought it was a real ambulance. It's only a tiny bird but the sound is so incredibly loud... I've been out in the garden throwing little stones at it hoping it'll fly away, but it never does," said one resident.

  3 months?

heck I'd be annoyed enough to want to get a female bird in the area to shut him up.

or relocate him... that works.

Wouldnt this be considered like a pest then?

If so then just get out an air rifle or pellet gun and problem solved!

  relocation or extermination

chances are if the bird manages to attract a female he's going to pass on his "techniques" to the chicks. so instead of one bird imitating an ambulance there'd be three or four.

If England is anything like the US, it's probably illegal to kill the bird until it's actual hunting season. Plus with all the whack job gun laws the UK is passing, it's probably impossible to have either of those things now.

I blame Sega and Nintendo, 60 years ago this would have been entertainment or dinner.

There isn't a season to kill blackbird's. I would of shot it by now.

the bird is a living wonder of nature

why would anyone want it gone or killed?

it has a right to live, doesn't it?

besides, I don't believe the bird's mimicking can be that real to fool anyone with average intelligence.

"besides, I don't believe the bird's mimicking can be that real to fool anyone with average intelligence."

I don't believe you have any experience with birds that are good at mimicking.

  A black bird, maybe

but it certainly sounds like a black minah bird, to me They can talk and imitate a lot of different sounds

  Link, Video, Sound

The link is no longer working for me. This works: (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/)

This link also has a video featuring the bird (don't know if the original link did). I gotta say, it does a good job. There is a guy talking in it, but the bird makes distinct siren sounds at 0:57, 1:31, and 1:40.

I greatly enjoy wildlife and particularly enjoy birds due to their accessibility. However, birds can get real annoying. Cardinals and Oriels are particularly loud backyard birds. Really fricken' annoying when trying to sleep in on a Saturday morning and they're right outside your window.

I don't have any experience with birds whose mimicking (siren sound for instance) is so real and loud as to have fooled me.

I believe there are birds that are extremely intelligent and good at mimicking. But I don't believe they can fool the average person. Birds can't match the volume of the ambulance. Ring tones coming from the tree top can't be the same as that from inside your pocket.

  Is it a Blackbird (Rook)?

The only bird I know which can mimic well enough to fool people is a Mynah bird. One I saw could mimic individual accents, voices, a dog barking and dialogue from the television. It was also a black. I'm told they live about 80 years aswell.
