US Senate Passes Ban on Genetic Discrimination

 

Washington: More than 10 years after it was first introduced by New York Rep. Louise Slaughter, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act has passed the US Senate 95-0.

The bill outlaws using genetic information gathered by medical research to discriminate against donors by denying them insurance coverage or jobs. President Bush will not oppose the law.

"It's the first civil rights bill of the new century of life sciences... We made sure today that our laws reflect the advances we are making," Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy told the LA Times.

Why would private healthcare insurance companies even need to go this far to deny people their coverage when all they need is their medical history (which they already have) and a good lawyer?

  This is a terrible law with deadly consequences  
 
The main consequence of this law will be more uninsured people and needless deaths.

Well if you insist on giving a large portion of the health budget to company profits then you are going to get that anyway.
