Moqtada Sadr Replies to Gates

Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr has replied to the words of US Defence Secretary Robert Gates who previously said that those taking part in the political process were not enemies of the US.

In a statement Mr Sadr said "I have no enemy but you. You are the occupier," adding “Which political process do you want to involve me in when you are occupying my land?”

Shia also encouraged Iraqis to rise up against US forces and discouraged internal Iraqis from killing fellow countrymen “as long as they don't help the occupier".

  It's fair

This man sounds more and more like a strong, nationalist leader in all of his statements. I'm sticking to my prediction that the resistance in Iraq will never stop fighting. They seem more organised and focused recently.

  The US

is just delaying the inevitable.

Eventually they will have to leave, and the factions within Iraq will fight for dominance, militarily and politcally.

  Sounds familiar to anyone?

Decade long Russian occupation of Afghanistan 1980's?

*neocons stare blankly*

This was before 9/11. We're not the first to try nation building in the middle east, the Russians tried the exercise in the decades before we did.

Picked out the weakest nation, built up nationalistic fervor about saving the middle east from itself and started pumping occupational troops in.

Just wondering if you are referring to the Iraqi occupation or the new Afghani one?

If you are referring to the Afghani one then you may want to know that pretty much the entire southern region of the country is controlled by the Taliban still.

As for Iraq... The entire nation is insecure... If you are a westerner outside of the green zone. You can pretty much assume your life forfeit...

Although they still haven't achieved their stated aims of national unity.

It's interesting to note that no bombing campaign has ever achieved the stated aims of the groups doing the bombing.

Attrition brought the IRA to the bargaining table.
