New Military Law Sees First Civilian Charged In Iraq

Alaa Mohammad Ali, a contractor working for the U.S. military in Iraq, is the first civilian to be charged under a new military law. Ali, who holds dual Iraqi-Canadian citizenship, works as a translator for the U.S. Army.

Ali is accused of stabbing another contractor in the chest during a fight between the two at a base near the town of Hit, in Anbar province.

A hearing similar to a grand jury is scheduled. Recommendations from that hearing will be forwarded to the commanding officer of the Multinational Corps, who will then decide if a trial is warranted.
