China’s Pigs Dying from Unknown Cause

The WHO and other international health organizations have been informed that pigs in the Guangdong Province have been dying in large numbers from an unexplained cause.

The Hong Kong media is awash with gory tales of pigs with blood pouring from their bodies, peasants selling sick pigs cheap and deceased pig carcasses floating down rivers. Doctors are begging China to share any information they might have.

The international health community is afraid China may be covering up an epidemic like they did with SARS. "They definitely need to tell the public but also people in the city as to the extent of the outbreak,” said Dr. Kwok Ka-ki.

Wasn't there a bacterial outbreak in the southern United States where pigs were being killed off rapidly or was that fish?? I think that occured a little around ten years ago or so.

OMG....make it stop! As gross and putrid the pics are, I really wonder what's the cause of this and how widespread it will get. Imagine the smell...eeeeeewwwwwww!!!!

Really, thats about as bad as it gets. No controls to stop people from selling the cheap ones sick. Sounds like an escalation nightmare.

  pet food connection.
Can't' say for sure but the stories are strikingly similar. In the US some of the tained petfood (which Chinese companies had knowingly added a poisonous chemical to) was fed to pigs. It could be nothing but I definitely think it's worth looking into.

Indeed the same ingredient that was added to petfood is often fed to pigs (and some other animals), as some people (some farmers/butchers etc) claim it isn't hazardous in the quantities they use (right...) supposidly meant to fatten them up or something along those lines. I'm not saying it's because of that, but given the lack of control on added substances to the food I can't say I am surprised.

  oh no
it's pig flu... like bird flu, but worse! it's probably got something to do with a ridiculous level of pollution and not respecting international farming health and safety guidelines. at any rate: no more char siu pork...

  It must be
the Americans getting revenge for little Fifi who died from bad dog food...

Seriously though...the Chineese don't like to ask for help even when they really (really) interesting to see how this plays out.
