A new report by the Program on Extremism at George Washington University found that at least 300 Americans are acting on Twitter as social media ambassadors for ISIS, spreading propaganda online and trying to recruit individuals.
According to the report, ISIS sympathizers "spasmodically create accounts that often get suspended in a never-ending cat-and-mouse game". About a third of these social media accounts are actually operated by women.
The researchers say it was tricky to find the accounts because most of them were anonymous. They used Twitter´s geo-locating tools to locate them or looked for the Arabic "al-Amriki" or "the American".
