British researchers say they have discovered about 8 million mummified dogs in the catacombs of Anubis around Saqqara, one of Egypt´s most historic sites.
The catacombs are believed to date from between roughly 747 to 30 B.C. when the Anubis animal cult apparently was a large part of Egyptian life.
"We´re very pleased and somewhat surprised by the results. We hadn´t expected that there would be so many animals, and it opens up a new series of questions," the project´s director Paul Nicholson says.
