Researchers Plan to Grow Lettuce on Mars

Science students at Southampton University in England have created a plan to put the first life on Mars via a lettuce-growing experiment.

The researchers intend to send a small greenhouse to Mars in which lettuce will be grown. "Lettuce on Mars", as the project is called, could become a reality by 2018.

"First, we will use a lab strain of lettuce that is as clean as it gets. Then we will sterilize all equipment including the surface of the seeds, so the greenhouse will be as virus free as it gets," the project leaders say.
