The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reportedly approved Oraquick, a HIV test for rapid and private use at home.
The test uses a mouth swab and gives results in only 20 to 40 minutes. "The availability of a home-use HIV test kit provides another option for individuals to get tested so that they can seek medical care, if appropriate," says Dr. Karen Midthun.
It is estimated that about 240,000 of the 1.2 million infected Americans don´t know that they carry the virus. Researchers found the take home HIV test accurate 99 percent of the time for people who do not have the virus.
